Cattle Club 2019

The Capella State High School Cattle Club is a program where students learn the necessary skills to present, parade and judge Cattle during the local show circuit.  In 2019 the students were involved in the preparation of three steers, Quarterback, Quicksilver and Quickcure; which were purchased by the school.  The students participate in junior judging at Beef Week and Comet Show and paraded and participated in the junior events at Capella, Clermont, Emerald and Springsure Shows.  The steers where then entered into the CQ Carcase Classic.
The 18 students in the program learnt many valuable skills and knowledge to support them in a array of areas.  Currently the group of students consists of a variety of skills levels.  There are students that have completed their Certificate II in Rural Operations who act as mentors for the younger students who are just starting out in their first year.  The program operates each day with students giving up their lunch times to care for the steers on the school grounds.  On Friday mornings, we also have a lesson allocated to the program where the focus is more on parading and judging skills.  Our Friday morning lesson is conducted mainly by volunteers and supervised by school staff.  Our community volunteers include Greg and Alicia Magee (St Omer /  BeeJay Brangus), Paul and Denise Studt (Coolabah), Cathy Murray (Serena Brangus), Sophie Grogan (SoMeLu), Demi Richmond, Rhonda Ryan and Rebecca Strathan.
Highlights include:
• 2018 - Grand Champion Steer of Clermont Show – Ashton Kemp led the steer which was loaned from the Magee family (St Omer / BeeJay Brangus, Capella)
• 2018 – First in the Hoof and Hook Competition at the Central Queensland Carcase Classic
